The Full Story
In 1816 René Laennec was examining a young woman at the Necker Hospital in Paris and felt it would be improper to press his ear to her chest. He rolled a sheet of paper into a tube and found he could hear her heart more clearly than before. He then built a hollow wooden cylinder, naming it the stethoscope from Greek words meaning 'chest' and 'to look at'. In 1819 he published a major book describing the sounds of heart and lung diseases. Two-earpiece stethoscopes, similar to modern ones, were developed in the 1850s.
