The Full Story
Beatrix Potter first told Peter Rabbit's story in an illustrated letter in 1893 to Noel Moore, the young son of her former governess. After several publishers turned it down, she privately printed 250 copies in 1901. Frederick Warne & Co. then published The Tale of Peter Rabbit with colour illustrations in 1902. It has since sold tens of millions of copies and is one of the best-selling children's books of all time. Potter used her income to buy farmland in the Lake District, much of which she left to the National Trust.
