The Full Story
Michael Bond was inspired by a lonely teddy bear on a shop shelf in London on Christmas Eve in 1956, which he bought as a present for his wife. He began writing stories about a small bear from 'darkest Peru' found at Paddington station. A Bear Called Paddington was published on 13 October 1958 with illustrations by Peggy Fortnum. Paddington is known for his duffle coat, battered hat, polite manners and love of marmalade. Bond wrote more than 20 Paddington books before his death in 2017.
