Toru Iwatani designed Pac-Man to appeal to a wider audience than the shooting games that dominated arcades. It was released in Japan on 22 May 1980 under the name Puck Man, from the Japanese expression 'paku paku', describing munching. Iwatani said the character's shape was inspired by a pizza with a slice missing. The four ghosts, known in English as Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde, each have different chasing behaviours. Guinness World Records recognised Pac-Man as the most successful coin-operated arcade game.
