When was the Game Boy released?

The Game Boy was developed by Nintendo's R&D1 team led by Gunpei Yokoi. It used a simple greenish monochrome screen and ran on four AA batteries for many hours, making it cheaper and longer-lasting than colour rivals. In North America it launched on 31 July 1989 with Tetris included, which helped make it a hit with all ages. Together with the later Game Boy Color, it sold about 118.7 million units. Its tough design became legendary: a Game Boy damaged by a bombing in the 1991 Gulf War still worked and was displayed in Nintendo's New York store.
