Binney & Smith originally made products such as industrial pigments and slate pencils for schools. In 1903 the company launched its first box of Crayola crayons, containing eight colours and costing five cents. The name was suggested by Edwin Binney's wife, Alice, combining the French word craie, meaning chalk, with 'ola' from oleaginous, meaning oily. The company was renamed Crayola LLC in 2007. Crayola now produces billions of crayons each year.
