Kelvin Kiptum broke Eliud Kipchoge's previous record of 2:01:09 by 34 seconds at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. He was only 23 and running just his third marathon. Kiptum's achievement raised hopes that he would become the first person to run an official marathon in under two hours. Tragically, he died in a car crash in Kenya in February 2024, aged 24. Kipchoge ran 1:59:40 in Vienna in 2019, but that time is not an official record because of rotating pacemakers and other special conditions.
