Which Language Has the Most Native Speakers?

Mandarin Chinese, the standard form of Chinese based on the Beijing dialect, is the mother tongue of approximately 920 million people — more than any other language on Earth. This is largely due to China enormous population of 1.4 billion, of whom about 70% speak Mandarin natively (the rest speak other Chinese varieties like Cantonese, Wu, or Min). Spanish ranks second with approximately 475 million native speakers, spread across Spain, Latin America, and parts of the United States. English comes third with about 373 million native speakers, concentrated in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and other former British territories. However, when total speakers (native plus second-language) are counted, English leads with approximately 1.5 billion speakers worldwide, since it serves as the dominant lingua franca for business, science, aviation, and the internet. Hindi, Bengali, Portuguese, and Russian round out the top languages by native-speaker count.
