Which Is the Most Spoken Language in the World?

By total number of speakers (native plus second-language), English leads with approximately 1.5 billion speakers worldwide, largely due to its role as the global lingua franca for business, science, aviation, and the internet. Mandarin Chinese, however, has the most native speakers — about 920 million — concentrated mainly in China. Spanish ranks third with about 550 million total speakers. Hindi, Arabic, Bengali, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, and Punjabi round out the top ten. Language rankings shift depending on whether native or total speakers are counted.
