The Dannebrog is a white Scandinavian cross on a red background. According to legend it fell from the sky on 15 June 1219 during a battle at Lyndanisse, in present-day Estonia, helping the Danes to victory. Historians cannot confirm the legend, but the red-and-white cross design is documented as a Danish royal symbol by the 14th century. Its off-centre cross, known as the Nordic cross, later inspired the flags of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Danes celebrate Valdemarsdag on 15 June to mark the flag's legendary origin.
