The Masjid al-Haram, or Great Mosque of Mecca, is the largest mosque in the world and the holiest site in Islam. It surrounds the Kaaba, the cube-shaped building that Muslims around the world face when they pray. Repeated expansions, especially since the mid-20th century, have enlarged it to cover hundreds of thousands of square metres of indoor and outdoor prayer space. During the annual Hajj pilgrimage it can accommodate more than 2 million people at once. The second-largest mosque is Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque, in Medina.
