The main island of Cuba stretches about 1,250 km from east to west and has an area of roughly 105,000 square kilometres, while the whole country, including the Isla de la Juventud and thousands of small cays, covers about 110,000 square kilometres. It lies about 145 km south of Key West, Florida, at the meeting point of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The second-largest Caribbean island is Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Christopher Columbus reached Cuba on his first voyage in October 1492. Cuba's highest peak, Pico Turquino in the Sierra Maestra, rises to about 1,974 metres.
