Moose live in the northern forests of North America, Scandinavia, Russia and the Baltic states. Large bulls can stand about 2.1 metres tall at the shoulder, and the biggest Alaskan bulls can exceed 700 kilograms. Their broad, palm-shaped antlers can span up to about 1.8 metres and are shed and regrown every year. Despite their size, moose are strong swimmers and will dive to feed on water plants. In Britain and Europe the same animal is commonly called an elk.
