Which country has the largest population?

According to the United Nations, India passed China in population around April 2023, ending China’s centuries-long position at the top. China’s population peaked at about 1.41 billion in 2021 and has been falling since, partly because of low birth rates following decades of the one-child policy. India’s population is much younger, with a median age of about 28 compared with about 39 in China. The United States is a distant third with around 340 million people, followed by Indonesia and Pakistan. The UN projects that India’s population will keep growing until the early 2060s, peaking at around 1.7 billion.
