Which animal is the loudest?

The sperm whale makes the loudest sounds of any animal, producing powerful clicks that can reach about 230 decibels underwater, used for echolocation and communication. Because sound travels differently in water, these figures are not directly comparable to airborne noise, but they are immense. The blue whale produces extremely loud, low-frequency calls that can travel hundreds of kilometres through the ocean. On land, howler monkeys and certain insects are remarkably loud for their size; the tiny water boatman insect can produce sound that is astonishingly loud relative to its body. Loudness helps animals communicate over long distances or through murky environments.
