Which alphabet is the most widely used?

The Latin alphabet developed from an early Greek alphabet by way of the Etruscans, and was used by the ancient Romans to write Latin. As the Roman Empire and, later, European trade and colonisation spread, it was adopted for languages across Europe, the Americas, Africa and Oceania. Today it is used for English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Indonesian, Turkish, Vietnamese, Swahili and many more. The basic modern Latin alphabet has 26 letters, though many languages add accents or extra letters such as ñ, ç and ß. It is also the standard script used internationally for things like scientific names and web addresses.
