The ruins of Babylon lie near the modern city of Hillah in central Iraq, on the banks of the Euphrates in ancient Mesopotamia. The city rose to power under King Hammurabi in the 18th century BC, famous for his code of laws. It reached its height under Nebuchadnezzar II in the 6th century BC, when it was among the largest cities in the world and was entered through the blue-tiled Ishtar Gate. The legendary Hanging Gardens were said to be here, although no firm archaeological evidence has been found. Babylon was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.
