Where is Wadi Rum?

Wadi Rum, nicknamed the Valley of the Moon, is a protected desert area of about 720 square kilometres in southern Jordan near the Saudi Arabian border. Towering sandstone and granite mountains rise from red sand, and the area contains rock carvings and inscriptions left over thousands of years, including by the Nabataeans. T. E. Lawrence passed through during the Arab Revolt of World War I and described it in his book Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Its Mars-like scenery has made it a favourite film location for movies including Lawrence of Arabia, The Martian and Dune. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 for both its natural and cultural value.
