Where is the largest lake?

Despite its name, the Caspian Sea is the largest inland body of water and the largest lake on Earth, spanning roughly 371,000 square kilometers. It is bordered by Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Azerbaijan. It is called a sea because its water is salty — a remnant of an ancient ocean — and because of its sheer size. Among freshwater lakes, Lake Superior is the largest by surface area, while Lake Baikal in Siberia holds the most water and is the deepest. The Caspian is also home to most of the world wild sturgeon, the source of prized caviar.
