Where Is the Grand Canyon?

The Grand Canyon stretches approximately 446 km through the Colorado Plateau in northwestern Arizona. It reaches up to 29 km wide and over 1,800 metres deep, exposing nearly 2 billion years of geological history in its layered rock walls. The Colorado River began carving the canyon about 5 to 6 million years ago, cutting through limestone, sandstone, shale, and schist. Grand Canyon National Park, established in 1919, attracts about 6 million visitors annually. The South Rim is open year-round and is the most visited area, while the North Rim — about 300 metres higher — closes in winter due to snow.
