Where is the Golden Temple?

The Harmandir Sahib is the holiest gurdwara, or place of worship, in Sikhism and stands in the city of Amritsar in north-west India, close to the border with Pakistan. The fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan, oversaw its construction and installed the Sikh scripture there in 1604. It sits in the middle of a sacred pool, the Amrit Sarovar, which gave the city its name. Its upper floors were covered in gold leaf in the early 19th century under Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It has entrances on all four sides as a symbol that people of every background are welcome, and its community kitchen serves free meals to tens of thousands of visitors every day.
