Where Is the Danakil Depression?

The Danakil Depression lies at the junction of three tectonic plates (African, Arabian, and Somali), where the crust is being pulled apart, creating one of the lowest points on the African continent — about 125 metres below sea level. Average annual temperatures exceed 34 degrees Celsius (the world highest), with summer peaks above 50 degrees Celsius. The landscape is starkly alien: sulphur-encrusted hydrothermal vents, fluorescent acid pools, active lava lakes (Erta Ale volcano), and vast salt flats (Lake Assal). Despite these extreme conditions, Afar people have extracted salt here for centuries, cutting blocks and transporting them by camel caravan — a tradition thousands of years old. The Danakil is also scientifically important: its extreme chemistry parallels conditions on early Earth and possibly Mars, making it a key site for astrobiology research on the limits of life.
