Where is Mount Etna?

Mount Etna towers over eastern Sicily between the cities of Catania and Messina. It is the highest active volcano in Europe outside the Caucasus, at roughly 3,300 metres, a height that changes as eruptions add or remove material from its summit. It is also one of the most active volcanoes in the world, erupting in some form almost every year. Written records of its eruptions go back at least 2,700 years, among the longest of any volcano. In 1669 a major lava flow reached and damaged Catania, and the mountain became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.
