The Full Story
Aconcagua rises to about 6,961 metres, making it the highest peak in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres. It is one of the Seven Summits, the highest mountains on each continent. Although its normal route is not technically difficult, its altitude and fierce winds make it dangerous. The first recorded ascent was by Swiss climber Matthias Zurbriggen in 1897. An Inca mummy of a child was discovered on its slopes in 1985, showing the Inca climbed high on the mountain for ceremonies.
