Twitter grew out of a podcasting company called Odeo, where Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Evan Williams and Noah Glass developed a short-message service. Dorsey posted the first tweet on 21 March 2006: “just setting up my twttr”. The service launched to the public in July 2006 and took off after the South by Southwest festival in 2007. Tweets were limited to 140 characters, based on the length of text messages, until the limit doubled to 280 in 2017. Elon Musk bought the company for about $44 billion in October 2022 and renamed it X in July 2023.
