Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian teacher working in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Basketball Association of America was founded on 6 June 1946 by owners of large arenas who wanted to fill them on nights without hockey. Its first game was played on 1 November 1946 in Toronto, where the Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers. In August 1949 the BAA merged with the rival National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association. The NBA counts the BAA years as part of its own history.
