President Thomas Jefferson originally sent envoys to buy only New Orleans, but Napoleon Bonaparte, needing money for war with Britain, offered the entire Louisiana territory. The treaty was signed on 30 April 1803 in Paris. The purchase roughly doubled the size of the United States. It worked out to less than three cents per acre. Land from the purchase eventually became all or part of 15 US states, and Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore it in 1804.
