The Full Story
The fire started on the evening of 8 October 1871 in or near a barn owned by Patrick and Catherine O'Leary. Fuelled by strong winds, dry weather and a city built largely of wood, it spread across the Chicago River into the business district. Over about two days, it destroyed an area of roughly 9 km² (3.3 square miles). Around 300 people died. Chicago rebuilt rapidly, becoming a centre of new architecture, including some of the world's first skyscrapers.
