When was the first talking film released?

The Jazz Singer, made by Warner Bros. and starring Al Jolson, used the Vitaphone sound-on-disc system to play recorded music and speech in sync with the film. Most of the film was still silent with title cards, but its few minutes of synchronised singing and speaking amazed audiences. Jolson's line 'Wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain't heard nothin' yet!' became famous. Its success triggered the rapid end of the silent film era within just a few years. By 1929 most major Hollywood studios had switched to making 'talkies'.
