The Full Story
English surgeon Claudius Amyand performed what is usually regarded as the first successful appendectomy in 1735 in London. He operated on an 11-year-old boy who had a groin hernia and found a perforated appendix within the hernia sac. Although appendectomy became common much later, Amyandβs case is an important early milestone in abdominal surgery. The operation is also the origin of the term Amyandβs hernia.
