When was the Battle of Hastings?

The Battle of Hastings was fought between the Norman army of William, Duke of Normandy, and the English army of King Harold II. Harold had just defeated a Norwegian invasion at Stamford Bridge in the north before marching his exhausted troops south. The battle lasted most of the day and ended with Harold’s death, traditionally said to be from an arrow to the eye. William was crowned King of England in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066, earning the name William the Conqueror. The battle actually took place about 11 km from Hastings, at a spot now called Battle, where William built an abbey.
