John Milton published Paradise Lost in ten books in 1667 and a revised version in twelve books in 1674, the year he died. Written in unrhymed blank verse and running to more than 10,000 lines, it retells the biblical story of the fall of Satan and of Adam and Eve's expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton had gone completely blind by about 1652, so he composed the poem in his head and dictated it to helpers. The character of Satan, proud and defiant, is one of the most discussed figures in English literature. The poem aims, in Milton's words, to 'justify the ways of God to men'.
