When was Nelson Mandela released from prison?

Mandela was arrested in 1962 and in 1964 was sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage in the Rivonia Trial for his fight against apartheid. He spent 18 of his 27 years behind bars on Robben Island, breaking rocks in a lime quarry. President F. W. de Klerk lifted the ban on the African National Congress in early February 1990, and days later Mandela walked out of Victor Verster Prison near Paarl, fist raised, before a global television audience. Mandela and de Klerk shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. In 1994 he became South Africa’s first Black president after the country’s first fully democratic election.
