Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger created Instagram after reworking an earlier check-in app called Burbn into a simple photo-sharing tool with filters. It launched on the iPhone on 6 October 2010 and gained about 25,000 users on its first day. It reached one million users in roughly two months. In April 2012 it arrived on Android and, days later, Facebook agreed to buy the 13-employee company for $1 billion. Instagram has since grown to more than two billion monthly users, adding Stories in 2016 and Reels in 2020.
