When was Bitcoin created?
Quick Answer
Bitcoin was described in a white paper published on 31 October 2008 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, and the network went live on 3 January 2009.
The Full Story
The white paper, titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System, proposed digital money that could be sent without banks, using a public ledger called a blockchain. On 3 January 2009 Nakamoto mined the first block, known as the genesis block, which contained a newspaper headline about bank bailouts. The first known real-world purchase took place on 22 May 2010, when programmer Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas, now celebrated as Bitcoin Pizza Day. The supply is capped at 21 million coins. Nakamoto stopped communicating publicly around 2011, and their true identity remains unknown.
