People had used willow bark to ease pain and fever for thousands of years; it contains salicin, which the body converts to salicylic acid. In 1897 Felix Hoffmann at the German company Bayer produced acetylsalicylic acid in a pure and stable form that was gentler on the stomach. Bayer registered the name Aspirin in 1899. It became one of the most widely used medicines in history. In the 1970s British pharmacologist John Vane discovered how aspirin works, by blocking chemicals called prostaglandins, and later shared a Nobel Prize.
