The fire started in the evening of 15 April 2019 in the cathedral's attic, where a restoration project was under way, and spread rapidly through the medieval oak roof timbers known as 'the forest'. The 19th-century spire designed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc collapsed live on television as crowds watched in shock. Around 400 firefighters fought the blaze for about 15 hours and saved the stone structure, both bell towers and many treasures. French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to rebuild within five years, and nearly a billion euros in donations poured in. The restored cathedral reopened on 7 December 2024.
