When did the Brooklyn Bridge open?

The bridge was designed by John A. Roebling, who died from an injury in 1869 before construction began. His son Washington Roebling took over but was left bedridden by decompression sickness, and his wife Emily Warren Roebling became essential in overseeing the project. When it opened after 14 years of construction, its main span of about 486 metres made it the longest suspension bridge in the world. It was also the first steel-wire suspension bridge. Emily Roebling was the first person to cross the finished bridge, carrying a rooster as a symbol of victory.
