The Full Story
Tambora's eruption peaked on 10–11 April 1815 and was rated 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, far larger than Krakatoa. The explosion blew more than 1,000 metres off the top of the mountain. Tens of thousands of people died directly and from the famine and disease that followed. The huge amount of sulphur thrown into the stratosphere cooled the Northern Hemisphere, making 1816 the 'Year Without a Summer'. Crops failed across Europe and North America, with snow falling in New England in June.
