When did Krakatoa erupt?

The climactic explosions on 27 August 1883 destroyed most of the island of Krakatoa, between Java and Sumatra. The final blast was one of the loudest sounds in recorded history, heard nearly 4,800 kilometres away on the island of Rodrigues. The eruption and resulting tsunamis, some over 30 metres high, killed more than 36,000 people. Ash thrown into the atmosphere cooled global temperatures and caused vivid red sunsets around the world for months. In 1927 a new volcano, Anak Krakatau ('Child of Krakatoa'), emerged from the sea at the same spot.
