When did cats first become domesticated?

Domestic cats emerged much later than dogs, probably around 9,000 years ago. Their domestication is linked to the rise of farming, when stored grain attracted mice and other rodents. Wildcats that tolerated human settlements gained access to food and gradually became associated with people. Ancient DNA and burials show that cats spread with human communities across the Mediterranean and beyond.
