What is a coronal mass ejection?
Space WeatherSun
Quick Answer
A coronal mass ejection, or CME, is a huge cloud of charged particles thrown out from the Sun. If aimed at Earth, it can trigger geomagnetic storms and auroras.
The Full Story
A coronal mass ejection is a massive eruption of plasma and magnetic field from the Sunβs corona, the outermost layer of its atmosphere. CMEs can travel at hundreds to thousands of kilometers per second and may take one to three days to reach Earth. When a CME interacts with Earthβs magnetic field, it can disturb satellites, radio systems, and electric power grids. Some of the brightest auroras occur after strong CMEs compress and energize the upper atmosphere.
Key Facts
1.Can reach Earth in roughly 1 to 3 days
2.Carries plasma and magnetic fields
3.Can cause geomagnetic storms and auroras
