Blood circulates in a continuous double loop powered by the heart. In one loop, the heart pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. The oxygen-rich blood returns to the heart, which then pumps it out through arteries to the rest of the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to every cell. Veins carry the now oxygen-poor blood back to the heart to start again. An adult body contains about five litres of blood, and the whole circuit takes under a minute.
