Hearing begins when sound waves travel into the ear canal and strike the eardrum, making it vibrate. These vibrations pass through three tiny bones in the middle ear — the smallest bones in the body — which amplify them and pass them to the cochlea, a fluid-filled spiral in the inner ear. Inside the cochlea, thousands of tiny hair cells convert the vibrations into electrical nerve signals, which travel to the brain and are interpreted as sound. Damage to these hair cells causes permanent hearing loss.
