Each eye has two small openings, called puncta, in the inner corner of the eyelids. They drain tears into the nasolacrimal duct, which empties into the nasal cavity. Normally this handles the steady trickle of tears that keep eyes moist. When you cry, far more tears are produced, so a flood of fluid runs into your nose and out.
