Why does Uranus look blue-green?
Solar SystemUranus
Quick Answer
Methane in Uranusโ atmosphere absorbs red light and leaves more blue and green light to reflect back to space. That gives the planet its pale blue-green color.
The Full Story
Uranus appears blue-green because methane in its atmosphere absorbs some of the red wavelengths in sunlight. The remaining light reflected back toward us is richer in blue and green tones. Unlike Neptune, Uranus has a somewhat paler appearance, partly because of differences in atmospheric haze and cloud structure. The color is a direct clue to its atmospheric composition, especially the presence of methane in the upper atmosphere.
