Why does skin tan in the sun?

human bodyhealth

Quick Answer

Tanning is the skin's defence response to UV damage: cells produce more melanin pigment to absorb future radiation.

The Full Story

Ultraviolet light damages DNA in skin cells, which triggers melanocytes to make more melanin. Some darkening happens within minutes as existing melanin oxidises, but the lasting tan develops over about 2–3 days. Melanin absorbs UV and helps shield cell nuclei. However, a tan provides only weak protection — roughly equivalent to SPF 2–4 — and is itself a sign that damage has occurred.

Key Facts

1.People of all skin tones have similar numbers of melanocytes; the difference is how much and what type of melanin they make.
2.UVA penetrates deeper into skin and contributes to ageing.
3.UVB is the main cause of sunburn.
