Why do we have daylight saving time?
historytime
Quick Answer
Clocks move forward in summer to shift daylight into the evening, first adopted widely to save fuel during World War I.
The Full Story
New Zealand entomologist George Vernon Hudson proposed a seasonal time shift in 1895, and British builder William Willett campaigned for it from 1907. Germany became the first country to introduce it nationally on 30 April 1916 to conserve coal during the war. Many countries followed. Today, energy savings are debated, and only about a third of countries still use it.
