Why do some mountains have a sharp, jagged shape?

GeologyErosion

Quick Answer

Sharp peaks usually form where ice and frost carve away rock on several sides at once. Erosion by glaciers can leave narrow ridges and horn-shaped summits.

The Full Story

Jagged mountain peaks often develop where glaciers and freeze-thaw weathering have attacked the mountain from more than one direction. Glaciers act like giant abrasive files, plucking and scraping rock from cirques and valley sides. If several glaciers erode around one summit, they can create a steep pyramidal peak such as the Matterhorn. In contrast, mountains without much glacial erosion may keep rounder, broader tops.

Key Facts

1.Glaciers erode rock by plucking and abrasion
2.The Matterhorn is a classic glacial horn
3.Freeze-thaw weathering splits rock in mountain climates
