Why do salt lakes become so salty in dry climates?
GeographyLakes
Quick Answer
Salt lakes get saltier because water flows in but cannot flow out, so evaporation leaves dissolved minerals behind. Over time, the salts concentrate to very high levels.
The Full Story
In endorheic basins, rivers and rainfall bring minerals into a lake, but there is no outlet to the sea. When the climate is dry, evaporation removes water while the dissolved salts stay behind. As the water level falls, the concentration of salts rises and can eventually become extreme. The Dead Sea, the Great Salt Lake, and Lake Eyre are well-known examples of this process. Many such lakes also change in size from season to season depending on rainfall and evaporation.
